Caleb Williams’ accuracy was a point of contention last season despite his emergence into one of the NFL’s best playmakers. The Chicago Bears quarterback ranked just No. 32 in completion percentage by hitting only 58.1% of his passes, far below the league-average mark of 63.4%. Those misses weren’t as costly for Williams as they would have been for many other QBs due to his incredible improvisational ability outside of the pocket, which he famously showcased with iconic throws against the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams during the NFL Playoffs.

Williams is widely expected to take an even bigger leap in his third season, but it’s only going to happen if he can hit some of the layups he missed last year. A video from Bears training camp on Wednesday should give Chicago fans confidence that he’s moving in the right direction. A year ago, Williams went viral for being unable to hit the pockets in a net during a throwing drill. This year? He hit every throw.

It’s a small moment, but training camp is about building good habits and showing progress, and Williams sure sounds like he’s doing both things so far. Bears wide receivers have raved about his ability to make plays work even when they don’t work. With all the weapons Chicago has on offense, he should be primed for a big year if he can make easy throws like these.

Williams is clearly in a much better spot coming into this season. He made the Bears a winning team with his amazing late-game heroics week-after-week. He’s excellent at avoiding sacks and suppressing turnovers, and when the pocket breaks down, he’s arguably the best in the league at making something positive happen.
The NFC North looks loaded again, but the Bears can feel confident that they have a chance in every game with Williams and head coach Ben Johnson leading the offense. We already know Williams can make spectacular plays. If he starts making the routine ones, too, Chicago’s offense could be one of the league’s best.
