When the NFL decided to make the “All-22” footage available of each game several years ago, it offered those in the media a chance to take fans inside the game, and break down each snap schematically. The decision also launched a wave of new-era analysts, who focused on the Xs and Os more than anything else.

That decision is in part the reason I have a job today, but I digress.

But the latest technological advancement gets us closer than ever to the mind of a quarterback. As NFL training camps roll on, you have seen clips or images of quarterbacks wearing cameras on their helmets. This is by design, to give the coaches greater insight into where a passer’s eyes are during each snap. It is one thing to ask a quarterback what he was looking at following a play, it is another to see it for yourself.

And trust me, it is not as if quarterback are always honest during those discussions, particularly after throwing an interception. This I also know from experience.

That leads us to this clip shared by the Philadelphia Eagles’ social media team, offering you a glimpse of what quarterback Jalen Hurts was looking at during a recent throw during practice. You’ll hear Hurts and the Eagles offense break the huddle, a protection call at the line — which seems to be a slide protection moving running back Saquon Barkley to the right — and then a throw over the middle for a touchdown to Dallas Goedert:

Of course, there is another level to this post from the Eagles, beyond taking you inside the helmet of Jalen Hurts.

The team’s social media department recently sparked a long discussion after sharing a clip of Hurts throwing an interception during training camp, on a route over the middle. That discussion comes in the wake of months of discourse over Hurts and just how effective a passer he can be when targeting that area of the field.

For now, we’ll focus on the technology, and how it takes us closer to the mind of a quarterback. But you know where this conversation is going to go from here …
