Roger Goodell has once again been busy issuing fines to players and coaches who run afoul of whatever policies the NFL decides it wants to enforce So, which of the following do you think brought a heavier fine this week from the League?
NFL Keeps Priorities In Order With New Round of Fines
a) A facemask
b) Not talking to the media
c) A late hit
And the answer is ...
B. Yes, Randy Moss got hit with a $25,000 fine for not talking to reporters this week. Apparently, he’s playing a team from the Boston area, and there is some interest on the part of the media about his participation in that game. This fine comes as a complete surprise, as Moss is almost universally recognized as someone who gets along brilliantly with reporters. Talking to reporter is a requirement of his contract, so it’s not like Moss didn’t see the penalty coming.
But, compare his fine with the one issued to fellow Viking Phil Loadholt, who will have to dish out $20,000 for a face mask. Or the $15,000 penalty handed out to Darnell Dockett of the Arizona Cardinals for a late hit on Mike Williams of the Seahawks.
It’s obviously in the interest of the NFL to keep the peace with the media that presents the League to its fans. But its not ever going to cause the kind of physical injury that a face mask or late hit could cause. So why does an NFL, which spent so much time tsk-tsking about late hits last week, now want to act like limiting your comments to the media is worse than injuring a fellow player?
