New Randy Moss Contract With Vikings Means No Franchise Tag

Randy Moss is in the final year of of a three-year deal he signed with the Patriots. Now that he's been traded to the Vikings, the question has become what they'll do with his contract.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Moss and the Vikings re-did his contract to include language that would not allow the Vikings to issue him the franchise or transition tag after this year.

There is no new money or years added to the deal.

Many players don’t like the franchise or transition tag because it’s not a long-term deal -- it’s just a one-year deal. Teams meanwhile love it because they can keep players for one more year instead of committing to a long-term deal.

This means that the pressure is on the Vikings to get a long-term deal done with Moss, if that’s what they want to do. It doesn’t seem likely that they would hand over a third round pick without some sort of future beyond 2010.
