A day after complaining publicly about the lack of communication between the NFL and NFL Players Association, commissioner Roger Goodell has met with union executive director DeMaurice Smith in what appears to be a meeting about meetings. The union described the informal summit as “an effort to advance the bargaining,” rather than an actual bargaining event.

Neither Smith nor his spokesman have agreed to discuss the non-meeting meeting with the media.
It’s better than nothing at all, which is what the two sides have given each other for months now. Talks were active during the summer, but have died down significantly since then, with the last formal communication taking place before Thanksgiving.
The two sides have only a few more weeks to establish a new collective bargaining agreement before the current deal expires, at which point players would possibly be locked out. Earlier this week the NFLPA stepped up its public awareness efforts, perhaps inspiring Goodell to critique the months worth of silence between the two parties.
