The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the NFL’s most successful teams in the postseason, and their big game performance and AFC Championship Game record stand as testament to that. That augurs poorly for the New York Jets in their AFC Championship Game against the Steelers on Sunday.
Steelers Vs. Jets: Pittsburgh Has .500 Record In AFC Championship Games
Almost all of the Steelers’ postseason success has come since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. This makes sense: the Steelers lead the NFL in wins, winning percentage, and Super Bowl wins since the merger, and can claim the outright lead in playoff wins with a defeat of the Jets.
As such, it’s no surprise that the Steelers have been great in big games: they’re 13-8 in AFC Championship Games and Super Bowls. That record is deceptive, though, because the Steelers are just 7-7 in AFC Championship Games, losing at least one conference championship game in each decade since the 1970s.
But the seven wins are the most by any AFC team.
The Steelers and Jets have never met in the AFC Championship Game, and Pittsburgh won the only playoff game between the two teams in 2004.
