2011 Super Bowl: Green Bay Packers Become NFC’s First Sixth Seed To Play For NFL Title

The Green Bay Packers are headed to the 2011 Super Bowl.

After a 21-14 victory over the Bears in the NFC Championship Game, the Packers will play for the NFL title for the first time since 1998.

The Packers became the first sixth seed from the NFC to reach the Super Bowl by winning on the road in Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Chicago this postseason.

The Packers are 3-1 in Super Bowls, having won Super Bowl I and II and then returning to the NFL’s championship game in 1997 for a win over the New England Patriots. They lost to the Denver Broncos in 1998, allowing John Elway to win his first Super Bowl.

This will be the first Super Bowl appearance for much of Green Bay’s roster, notably Donald Driver and Charles Woodson.

Green Bay’s also got some recent history against the tenants of Cowboys Stadium, the site for Super Bowl XLV. The Packers handed the Cowboys a 45-7 defeat this season that was followed by the firing of Cowboys coach Wade Phillips.

Expect much of the storytelling about the Packers this week to discuss how Aaron Rodgers has played in this postseason: Rodgers has been superb for Green Bay of late, and will have a chance to match Brett Favre’s single Super Bowl win as a Packers quarterback.
