Eric Mangini Fired: Browns May Look To Jon Gruden, John Fox Or Marty Mornhinweg

The Cleveland Browns have fired Eric Mangini which means Mike Holmgren’s offseason will begin with a coaching search. The Monday after the regular season ends is called Black Monday for all the coaches that will be fired so we expect more candidate names to pop up but early speculation includes several names.

Peter King of SI.com writes in MMQB that he expects Holmgren to “strongly consider” Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg for the job. Holmgren coached Mornhinweg in high school 30 years ago.

John Fox is also considered a candidate, according to King and NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora. Fox’s contract with the Carolina Panthers was not renewed so he’s on the market. King suggests Fox could bring Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy with him if hired in Cleveland.

And it wouldn’t be a coaching search unless Jon Gruden’s name is brought up. La Canfora writes via Twitter that the Browns “love” Gruden and he has some interest but it may not be the best fit.

The Browns appare to have their quarterback in place with Colt McCoy so whoever comes in would likely have to work with him. That’s an important point to remember for some of these big names coaches that would want to run the entire show.

There will inevitably be plenty of other potential candidates popping up in the coming days and weeks.
