Christian Ponder Named Vikings Starting QB Over Donovan McNabb

The Minnesota Vikings are turning the page on the Donovan McNabb era, an emerging theme in McNabb's late career. First-round pick Christian Ponder takes over for McNabb, and the Vikings join the growing ranks of NFL teams led by rookie quarterbacks this year. Jason LaCanfora reported today that Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier has informed both players of the change.

The 1-5 Vikings failed to muster 300 yards of offense in a prime time embarrassment at the hands of the Chicago Bears this week. McNabb completed 19 of 24 passes for 177 yards in that game, but was sacked five times before he was replaced by Ponder. The Florida State product finished the game completing nine of 17 passes for 99 yards.

For the season, McNabb has completed 94 of 156 passes for four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

Ponder will likely get the chance to throw early and often this week as the Vikings host the seemingly unstoppable Green Bay Packers. Ponder was the twelfth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
