Donovan McNabb Responds To Christian Ponder Being Named Vikings Starting QB

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier named Christian Ponder his starting quarterback Wednesday for the rest of the season, a decision that caught erstwhile starter Donovan McNabb off guard. But while McNabb isn't happy about losing his job, he vowed to stay prepared and support his rookie teammate. From Mark Craig of the Star-Tribune:

“[Coach Leslie Frazier] is the head coach and decisions are made. At this particular point, it’s for me to continue to prepare and make sure that we continue to support Christian and make sure that he’s ready. But most important for me, is to prepare because I’m just one play from going back in. Just make sure I’m ready when called upon and try to lead us to victory.”

McNabb said he feels he still deserves to start.

“We’ve done some good things on offense, scored some points and moved the ball,” McNabb said. “But, again, the only thing I can do at this point is continue to support Christian and be ready when called upon.”

With a 1-5 record, the Vikings are clearly playing for the future. But while the team’s focus has now shifted to their first-round pick, McNabb thinks he still has something to offer:

”I have a lot of football left. At the end of the year, that will be something I look at and see what’s next.

McNabb has completed 60.3 percent of his passes with two interceptions in six games, but that’s in part because he’s making short throws -- he’s averaging just 6.58 yards per attempt, which ranks 27th among NFL quarterbacks, and has thrown only four touchdowns.
