Jay Cutler Injury Confirmed By Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith

The Chicago Bears are confirming that Jay Cutler suffered a thumb injury in Sunday's victory over the San Diego Chargers. Cutler suffered a broken thumb and the Chicago Tribune has reported that he's going to miss at least 6-8 weeks.

Bears coach Lovie Smith acknowledged the injury on a Monday morning radio show.

“Jay does have a right thumb fracture,” Smith said during an appearance on WBBM-AM 780. “He hurt it on the tackle on the interception. Of course, we took X-rays last night and he’ll be seeing specialists this morning and we’ll be able to tell you a little more after that.”

But Smith declined to get into any talks about how long Cutler may be out.

“I’m not going to play doctor right now,” he said. “We are going through the process. We will be able to tell you a little bit more. It’s all we know right now.”

Surgery is a possibility but, as Smith said, they don’t know enough right now. For now, though, the Bears are planning on being without their starting quarterback moving forward.
