NFL Injury Report, Week 12: Michael Vick, Adrian Peterson Doubtful

As the NFL’s Sunday and Monday night games approach, SBNation Medical Expert Dr. Ali Mohamadi discusses some of the most significant remaining injuries impacting this weekend’s games and how they might affect your fantasy rosters:

Quarterbacks

Matt Hasselbeck, Tennessee Titans (elbow - probable)
TEN (5-5) vs. TB (4-6), 1pm

The Titans' QB left his team's 23-17 loss at Atlanta last Sunday with a right (throwing) elbow strain suffered in the third quarter when his hand was struck by a defender while throwing a pass. Hasselbeck experienced pain when attempting to throw the ball on the sidelines and was replaced by rookie Jake Locker, who threw two touchdowns and nearly pulled off an improbable comeback, to fall just short. However, Hasselbeck's elbow has improved considerably over the course of the week, and after participating fully in practice on Friday he has been listed as probable for tomorrow's game against the Buccaneers.

Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles (ribs - doubtful)
PHI (4-6) vs. NE (7-3), 4:15pm

After missing last week's win over the Giants, Vick has only done light throwing in practice this week due to lingering effects of his two broken ribs. Reading the tea leaves from Head Coach Andy Reid's statements this weeks, it appears backup Vince Young will likely get the nod against the Patriots on Sunday as the Eagles try to climb back into the NFC East race behind Dallas and New York .

Running Backs

Peyton Hillis, Cleveland Browns (hamstring - questionable)
CLE (4-6) @ CIN (6-4), 1pm

Hillis, who has missed multiple weeks with a number of ailments this season, most recently a pulled hamstring, returned to limited action in practice on Friday and is listed as questionable on the Browns' injury report. With backup RB Montario Hardesty expected to return Sunday from a calf injury, and Chris Ogbonnaya filling in admirably last week against Jacksonville, Hillis may only see a handful of carries against Cincinnati, if he plays at all.

Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings (ankle - doubtful)
MIN (2-8) @ ATL (6-4), 1pm

Peterson was carted off the field in the second quarter last week’s loss to Oakland with a left ankle injury and according to head coach Leslie Frazier is “very, very doubtful” for Sunday’s game at Atlanta. The injury took place at the end of a running play, with an opposing defender falling on Peterson’s left leg. Peterson was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain and spent much of the week in a walking boot, missing all practices this far. If Peterson is unable to suit up on Sunday, RB Toby Gerhart would take his place in the lineup.

Wide Receivers

A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals (knee - probable)
CIN (6-4) vs. CLE (4-6), 1pm

Green, who has been stellar in his rookie season, suffered a hyperextended left knee in the Bengals’ Week 10 loss to Pittsburgh, and missed last week’s game at Baltimore . After fully participating in practice on Friday, however, Green was listed as probable for tomorrow’s game against the Browns, and his return should provide a spark for QB Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati offense.

Andre Johnson, Houston Texans (hamstring - probable)
HOU (7-3) @ JAC (3-7), 1pm

Although the Texans have lost QB Matt Schaub to injury, they will almost certainly regain Johnson in the lineup on Sunday after their star WR missed six weeks with a hamstring tear that required surgery. The Texans have been very conservative in their approach to Johnson’s rehabilitation, and after he participated fully in practice Friday, it appears this has resulted in a complete recovery. At this point, Johnson’s effectiveness may be more a question of whether new QB Matt Leinart is able to get him the ball rather than his overall health.

Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons (hamstring - probable)
ATL (6-4) vs MIN (2-8), 1pm

Jones aggravated a hamstring injury in Week 10 and sat out last week’s win over Indianapolis . Although he is listed as probable for Sunday’s game against the Vikings, as Jones has already proven this season, hamstring injuries are prone to re-injury, and Falcons fans are undoubtedly holding their breath that their rookie WR will be able to make it through the remainder of the season without any further setbacks.

Jeremy Maclin, Philadelphia Eagles (shoulder, hamstring - doubtful)
PHI (4-6) vs. NE (7-3), 4:15pm

The Eagles lost Maclin during their Week 10 loss to Arizona due to injuries to the shoulder and hamstring, and he did not suit up last week against the Giants. Maclin has not practiced this week so far and is unlikely to suit up against the Patriots on Sunday, with Jason Avant likely to get the start in his place.

Cornerbacks

Nnamdi Asomugha, Philadelphia Eagles (knee - questionable)
PHI (4-6) vs. NE (7-3), 4:15pm

Asomugha injured his left knee in practice Thursday, and although initial word out of Philadelphia feared the worst, it appears he suffered a hyperextension rather than sustaining any ligament damage. Although that bodes well for the long term, Asomugha missed practice yesterday and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against New England . Head Coach Andy Reid indicated that Asomugha is feeling well and stands a chance to play, but it remains to be seen whether the pain and swelling will subside enough for him to feel comfortable enough to test it out in a game situation.
