Texans Plan To Sign Jake Delhomme Or Jeff Garcia After Matt Leinart’s Injury

With Matt Schaub on injured reserve with a foot injury, and Matt Leinart set to join him after fracturing his left collarbone on Sunday, the Houston Texans will sign either Jake Delhomme or Jeff Garcia on Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Garcia was one of five quarterbacks that worked out for the club last week and will work out alongside Delhomme on Tuesday. That initial group of quarterbacks included former NFL starters Kellen Clemens, Trent Edwards and Brodie Croyle, as well as Chase Clement, who played in the United Football League following his collegiate career at Houston-based Rice University.

The Texans signed Clemens to be the No. 3 quarterback behind Leinart and 2011 fifth-round pick T.J. Yates, who is now the de facto starter of an 8-3 team that has a two-game lead over the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South standings. Texans head coach Gary Kubiak made it known on Monday that he wanted to add a quarterback with experience to the roster.

“We’ve got a young quarterback and a backup who’s been here for four days,” Kubiak said according to the Houston Chronicle. “So we’ve got to find some experience, somebody who’s been in a few rodeos, and make sure we’re preparing for down the road.”

The 41-year-old Garcia spent five seasons with current Texans quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp with the San Francisco 49ers. but has not thrown a pass or started an NFL game since the 2008 season. The 36-year-old Delhomme started four games for the Cleveland Browns last season, completing over 60 percent of his pass attempts, but was intercepted seven times and replaced in the starting lineup by Colt McCoy. The Browns released Delhomme from the final year of his contract once the lockout was lifted.
