David Akers Sets Single-Season Record For Most Field Goals

With his third field goal of the game, David Akers set the NFL single-season mark for successful attempts in a season. The 44-yarder was his 41st of the season. Earlier in the game, he had hit field goals from 53 and 29 yards, respectively. That comes on the heels of his setting the San Francisco 49ers franchise record for points in a season, surpassing Jerry Rice's record.

Among Akers’ field goals are 12 of at least 40 yards or longer. His first field goal of the game was his seventh of 50 or more yards.

Of course, Akers has only been able to kick so many field goals because the 49ers offense has not been very good inside the red zone. They are among the worst teams in converting their chances into touchdowns, which has led to some serious frustration on the part of head coach Jim Harbaugh. That frustration was once again on display after Akers' record-setting kick, in which Harbaugh appeared to be looking for a leverage penalty against the Seattle Seahawks.
