Jerry Richardson’s Peyton Manning Confrontation Was Overblown, Says Drew Brees

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has been reportedly firing condescending remarks at Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning during the most recent round of NFL labor negotiations. Yahoo! Sports’ Jason Cole’s sources claim Richardson said, among other things, “What do you know about player safety?” in response to a comment by Manning on the subject.

Arizona Cardinals kicker Jay Feely, who was not in the room, has also said Richardson asked Manning, “Do I need to help you read a revenue chart son?”

But New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has come to Richardson’s defense, sort of, saying, “I wouldn’t say that things were disrespectful.” Brees is widely known to be a nice guy, but that’s still one contrary assessment from someone who was actually there. And it’s easy to imagine intense personalities like Manning and Richardson not getting along — doesn’t necessarily mean it’s entirely Richardson’s fault, either.

Then again, a recent ESPN.com story cited sources on both sides of the negotiations who felt Richardson was the “least flexible” member of either party at the table.
