The NFL and NFLPA are currently in negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that would keep the NFL going and avoid a lockout or work stoppage before March 3rd, the expiration date of the current CBA. Until midnight on March 3rd, teams can still release and sign players. After that, though, it’s over.
Potential NFL Cuts Could Include Vikings WR Bernard Berrian, 49ers CB Nate Clements
We've already seen a few big names released including Cleveland Browns DT Shaun Rogers, New York Jets NT Kris Jenkins and LB Vernon Gholston, as well as Chicago Bears DT Tommie Harris.
Who else could be cut this week?
ESPN's Adam Schefter offers up a few possibilities: Arizona Cardinals QB Derek Anderson and LB Joey Porter, San Francisco 49ers CB Nate Clements, Pittsburgh Steelers OT Flozell Adams and Minnesota Vikings WR Bernard Berrian.
In my mind, the best name on that list would be Berrian. He was the Bears 2004 third round pick and signed a $42 million deal with the Vikings in 2008. He's never had a 1,000 yard season but is a deep threat that could be useful to someone. Clements may draw some interest, too, as will the others, whenever football starts up again.
Teams can sign players until March 3rd, but the problem is that a lockout may keep the players and coaches from working with each other. That means continuity becomes important. A team like the Kansas City Chiefs may not want to sign Berrian even though they need a receiver because, if a lockout goes most of the summer, Berrian would be far behind in learning the offense. It's just another problem that's caused by the inevitable work stoppage.
