Michael Vick Will Sign Franchise Tag From Eagles, According To Report

The Philadelphia Eagles placed the franchise tag on QB Michael Vick guaranteeing they’ll be able to keep him in Philly for, at minimum, one more year. The franchise tag for quarterbacks in 2011 is expected to be over $16 million.

Vick will now put pen-to-paper and sign the tag on Wednesday, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The current labor deal between the players and owners ends Thursday night so, if he wanted to sign it at all, he doesn’t have much time.

It’s interesting, though, that he’s actually signing the tag before an agreement is worked out. The NFLPA has said they feel the franchise tag is meaningless without a new CBA in place. That said, the franchise tag, or a similar concept, is expected to make it into the next deal so the Eagles -- and Vick -- are just covering all their bases.

Vick’s situation is unique, as everyone knows. After his stint in prison, he returned to the Eagles in 2009 with a very limited role. By early in the 2010 season, he gained the Eagles starting QB job and never gave it up en route to winning the AP comeback player of the year.
