NFL Lockout: Owners, Players Will Meet As Deadline Looms

Along with a federal mediator, the NFL and NFLPA will continue to meet in pursuit of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The deadline to get a deal done comes at 11:59 p.m. on March 3rd. After that, we will officially be in a work stoppage.

The two sides will be meeting at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, according to NFL Network’s Albert Breer. The meeting, according to Breer, will end sometime early in the afternoon so that all NFL owners can have a meeting in Virginia later in the day. More mediation after the owners meeting is possible.

The NFLPA has brought along the usual suspects as well as executive committee member Drew Brees and president Kevin Mawae.

Wednesday’s meeting could be interesting because it comes one day after Judge David Doty ruled the NFL’s contracts with the TV networks violate the CBA. Another hearing will be held to determine whether the league will have access to the $4 billion in “lockout insurance” those contracts would have brought.

With that move, the union potentially gained some leverage it previously didn’t have. Perhaps that’s the kick-in-the-butt both sides needed to get moving on a deal. Either way, getting a deal done in the next day and a half seems nearly impossible.

So, with less than two days before the deadline, we’re back to waiting.
