Yesterday Warren Moon threw down to CBSSports.com on 2011 NFL Draft assessments of Cam Newton, which the Pro Football Hall of Famer feels are often racially biased. He specifically mentioned concern over reports that delved into Newton's supposedly phony smile, which leads us back to Pro Football Weekly's Nolan Nawrocki.
Warren Moon Says Cam Newton Criticism Is ‘Racially Biased’; Scout Responds
Earlier this week, a Nawrocki write-up of Newton went absolutely in on the Heisman Trophy winner, impugning him for his “fake smile” among a half-million other things. So it’s totally clear which draft pundit Moon is talking about.
Nawrocki responded to Moon, citing his own report on white quarterback Jimmy Clausen last year. Not sure if that infamous "degree of entitlement that is off the charts" remark was Nawrocki's, but I'm assuming it was something like that. So Nawrocki is right to cite his hater credentials here. The man hates 'em as he sees 'em.
This isn’t to say that black quarterbacks don’t have to overcome unfair perceptions to this day. But Newton is kind of a weird case, as he does do more preening for the camera than most quarterbacks. Whether that rubs you the wrong way or strikes you as a sign of confidence is up to you. Or maybe you should just hate all future Carolina Panthers.
