NFL Lockout: Second Extension May Be ‘All But A Done Deal’

The NFL owners and NFL Players Association extended for 24 hours the deadline to come to an agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The previous CBA expired on Thursday night but the 24 hour extension bumped that to Friday night.

So here we stand on Friday and the early news is good news. Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal tweets he’s hearing that a 7-10 day extension is “all but a done deal.

The two sides are meeting separately with federal mediator George Cohen on Friday and it's believed they are working out the terms of another extension.

As we previously noted, coming to an agreement on another extension is the best possible news we can hear. Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports reported that another extension “will almost certainly be headed for a settlement that will result in a multi-year deal before the end of this month.”

I don’t think either side wants to go down the litigation road. If the NFLPA files for decertification, and the NFL responds with a lockout, we’re headed down a road from which we can’t return. Plus, if a deal isn’t done before the extension runs out, the motivation to get another one done may not come until August or September when the season gets closer.

Let’s hope these extensions mean something.
