The 2011 NFL Draft is in full swing, and already, the experts’ draft grades have come in for Thursday’s first round and they’ll continue all weekend. ‘Tis the season for bold proclamations and pontification. And you already know to keep it all in perspective, so this isn’t so much a reminder of how unpredictable guys like Cam Newton, Christian Ponder, or Julio Jones can be.
NFL Draft Grades, In Perspective
It’s really just an excuse to relive the scene from 2007, when Jamarcus Russell went no. 1:
Especially at a time when EXPERT ANALYSIS has taken center stage, this video really kinda made my afternoon. For instance, every single thing Mel Kiper says is hilarious.
From Kiper:
With the quarterback situation the way it is right now, Jamarcus Russell’s going to immediately energize that Raider Nation. That fanbase, that football team, on the practice field, in the locker room. Three years from now you could be looking at a guy who’s certainly one of the elite, top five quarterbacks in this league.
When you look at the difference between Brady Quinn and Jamarcus Russell, everybody says it’s the superior physical ability. ... Nobody has an arm like Jamarcus Russell, and [his] mobility is a little underrated. ... Obviously he’ll need a little time, but you’re talking about two-to-three year period once he’s under center.
Look out, because the skill level that he has is certainly John Elway-like.
Did he really say “John Elway-like”?
Certainly!
