Everyone knows by now that QB Terrelle Pryor has left the Ohio State football program and most league observers are predicting he’ll enter the NFL’s supplemental draft. If I had to guess, I’d say that’s what he’ll do but there’s another league that could be an option -- the UFL.
UFL Could Offer Equity In League For ‘Marketable Star’; Paging Terrelle Pryor...
The relatively young league could be very interested in Pryor joining them. So much, in fact, that they “will consider offering equity in league to marketable star if he plays in their league over NFL,” according to CNBC’s Darren Rovell.
Rovell didn’t name the “marketable star” but it’s not hard to figure out it’s Pryor. Would Pryor actually choose the UFL over the NFL supplemental draft? Some folks connected to the UFL don’t think that’s such a crazy idea.
So, if Pryor did go to the UFL, and they did offer equity in the league, what would that translate to in dollars? I can’t say that I have specifics of the UFL’s financials but I do know that the UFL has had financial troubles in the past going as far as delaying the final game checks last season. That tells me the long-term viability of the UFL is in question.
So equity in a sports league sounds good but, when that sports league isn’t worth much, it’s not so enticing.
