In a fantastic piece from Out Magazine, former NFL star WR Michael Irvin recalls finding out the day his brother was gay. It wasn't something Irvin talked about with friends growing up. His family knew but they never discussed it. It wasn't something that was brought up in the papers when Irvin was winning a national title with 'The U' or his Super Bowl victories with the Cowboys.
More To Michael Irvin Than You Realize
But it was there and it’s something that, as he tells Out Magazine in a fantastic interview, helped shape his life forever. A lot of football fans know Irvin from his days as a flashy receiver who had lots of women and, at times, drugs.
In the Out Magazine piece, you learn so much more about him.
That he’s actually an outspoken critic of homophobia and that he wants a professional athlete to one day have no fear of coming out.
“If anyone comes out in those top four major sports, I will absolutely support him,” says Irvin. “That’s why I do my radio show every day. When these issues come out, I want to have a voice to speak about them. I think growth comes when we share. Until we do that, we’re going to be stuck in the Dark Ages about a lot of things. When a guy steps up and says, ‘This is who I am,’ I guarantee you I’ll give him 100% support.”
We’d post more excerpts here but it’s worth taking a look at the entire piece. He doesn’t shy away from the mistakes he’s made but there’s a lot more to Michael Irvin the person than I realized.
