John Mackey, a Pro Football Hall of Fame member and one of the best tight ends in the history of the NFL, passed away Wednesday. The 69-year-old had suffered from dementia for several years following the conclusion of his football career.
NFL’s Roger Goodell Remembers John Mackey
The NFL lost a legend on Thursday when it was announced Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey had passed away. He was not only a legend on the field but off it as well as the head of the NFL Players Association.
NFLPA executive director already offered his thoughts on the loss of Mackey and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did the same in a statement released by the league.

“Previous to John, tight ends were big strong guys like [Mike] Ditka and [Ron] Kramer who would block and catch short passes over the middle,” former Colts coach and fellow Hall of Famer Don Shula told The Baltimore Sun. “Mackey gave us a tight end who weighed 230, ran a 4.6 and could catch the bomb. It was a weapon other teams didn’t have. ”
