Could the New England Patriots cut one or both of Chad Ochocinco and Albert Haynesworth to send a message? It seems improbable, but a report suggests they might.
However, a recent report by Dan Pompei of National Football Post suggests that neither is a lock to remain with the team before the season opener. Pompei quotes a fellow league executive who believes Belichick is using both players to increase his hold on the Patriots’ locker room.
One NFL executive familiar with the Patriots ways told me he believes one or both of the big name acquisitions will be cut before the season starts. The front office man thinks coach Bill Belichick will use the controversial players to help control and send a message to his locker room.
The Patriots don’t have a heavy financial obligation to either player, as ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss notes. If they wanted, they could cut Ochocinco or Haynesworth without owing them much money. Nevertheless, SB Nation’s Patriots blog Pats Pulpit is skeptical of the report.
