One of the more intriguing storylines of San Francisco's offseason has been the ongoing quarterback competition between incumbent starter Alex Smith and rookie second-round pick Colin Kaepernick. Throughout camp, new 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has stressed that both men will have an equal opportunity to fight for the starting job. Though, as of Tuesday afternoon, it seems that the fight may be getting a little one-sided.
Alex Smith Gaining Edge In San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Competition
Alex Smith is the current favorite to become the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.
According to reports from CSN Bay Area, Harbaugh declared that Smith has slowly become the favorite to win the position. The announcement came following back-to-back practices on Monday and Tuesday in which the 27-year-old led the first team offense with great success.
“There’s some separation there,” Harbaugh said. “Alex has done a fine job. But Kaep is doing a phenomenal job. He is going to be one heck of a talent and one heck of a player.”
Smith has played at least seven games each season for San Francisco since being selected with the number-one pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. He has thrown for career totals of 9,399 yards, 51 touchdowns, and 53 interceptions, for a passer rating of 72.1.
