The New York Jets took home the inaugural MetLife Trophy with a 17-3 win over the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Monday night.
Giants Vs. Jets Final Score: G-Men Fall To Crosstown Counterparts,17-3
Last week, MetLife Inc. reached a 25-year agreement with both clubs for the naming rights to New Meadowlands Stadium.
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez connected with wide receiver Santonio Holmes on a 17-yard touchdown late in the second half for the go-ahead score. Fourth-round running back Bilal Powell added a one-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter before Nick Folk sealed the game with a 33-yard field goal with 4:07 to play.
Giants kicker Ryhs Lloyd opened the scoring with a 34-yard field goal late in the second quarter.
The Giants were in position to score, but came up empty on three trips inside the Jets' 30-yard line. Eli Manning was intercepted by safety Jim Leonhard on the first possession of the game, and in the third quarter, back-to-back red zone opportunities produced zero points. No. 3 running back Danny Ware stopped before the goal-line on a fourth-and-one play and a 42-yard field goal attempt by Lloyd was blocked.
”We had some chances. But we didn’t finish anything offensively. Lots of yards but no points,” head coach Tom Coughlin said afterwards.
Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka exited the game with a groin injury, but told NBC-4's Bruce Beck that the injury was "not serious at all" during a sideline interview in the fourth quarter.
The Giants “hosted” tonight’s game in the shared stadium, but it will be the Jets who will be designated the home team when the two New York teams meet again on Christmas Eve.
