John Carlson Injury: Seahawks TE Is Out For Season, According To Report

Seahawks Tight End John Carlson will undergo shoulder surgery, ending his season before it even began, according to a report. Recently acquired Zach Miller now becomes the unquestioned starter in Seattle.

Seattle Seahawks tight end John Carlson will miss the 2011 season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Miller will obviously now see the bulk of the action for the Seahawks at tight end. He's been as steady as anyone at that position in the NFL over the past four seasons since being drafted out of Arizona State. He's missed only two games (one each the past two yeas), and has averaged 56.5 receptions and 678 yards a season for the Raiders.

Carlson was a revelation in 2008, his rookie year, with 55 receptions and 5 touchdowns, and followed that up with 51 catches and 7 scores in 2009, but had a massive drop-off in production last year, tallying only 31 catches for 318 yards and one touchdown.

Now, that's not to say that his injury won't hurt the Seahawks. Too much talent is a problem every coach would love to have. Pete Carroll no longer has it, but the Seahawks are by no means crippled at tight end. 6-foot-5 Anthony McCoy from USC now becomes Miller's primary backup.
