Darnell Dockett, And An Important Lesson About Gun Ownership

Last seen angering PETA and (possibly related) feeding his pet alligator Bob Evans pancakes, Darnell Dockett made news on Twitter again today. As he told the world this morning:

Damn I almost brung my “ROCKET” into work this morning like gilbert arenas. But mine was by accident it was in my book bag.

He knew his bag was a little heavy.

Kept sayin to myself why is my book bag so heavy, looked in side it was Big pookey”nickel plated Glock 40” trying to come to work w/me! Smh

So, what’s the important takeaway from all this?

Well, for one thing, if you’re going to exercise the right to own a firearm, it’s important to take the responsibility seriously. Guns aren’t inherently unsafe, but they are if you don’t take them seriosuly. A gun belongs in a safe place, and out of reach of any children and/or pet alligators. And not buried in a book bag. A gun is liable to end up in the wrong hands if an owner doesn’t keep track of them. What’s more, Darnell’s apparent carelessness could have gotten him in serious trouble had brought a weapon to his workplace. He’d open himself up to discipline from the NFL, and depending on the circumstances, he might have even faced discipline from the state. If there’s a lesson to be taken from this case, it’s that guns are not funny, they are not toys, and they need to be handled with care, lest the owner endanger others and his or her self. On the surface, Darnell seems to think this incident is funny, but here’s to hoping that he’s compensating for what was a truly traumatic event, where his career flashed before his eyes and he realized how reckless he’d been. Here’s to hoping that, deep down, Darnell Dockett learned a lesson today. Hopefully you did, too.

If we learned nothing else, I’m just glad that we all finally know that Darnell Dockett named his glock “Big Pookey”, because that’s really quite awesome.

And the lesson, I think, is that if you want to own a gun, give it a hilarious name, and nobody will ever judge you for owning a gun, because they’ll be too busy giggling. And for anyone out there wringing their hands over legal ramifications, don’t even worry about it.

It’s Arizona, you guys!
