Chiefs, Tamba Hali Agree To Terms On Five-Year, $60M Extension

The Chiefs signed the top pass-rusher to a huge new contract.

John Clayton reports that, as expected, the Chiefs have reached agreement with outside linebacker Tamba Hali on a huge contract extension.

Big news of the night is the contract of Chiefs OLB Tamba Hali. He agreed to a five-year, $60 million deal that had $35 mill in guarantees

Hali is emerging as one of the top defensive players in football. He was dominant on the pass rush in 2010, registering 14.5 sacks in a banner season, and prompting Peter King to name him the 17th-best player in the NFL.

Hali had the Chiefs’ franchise tag, and teams sometimes will sign such players to long-term deals in order to free up cap space. But that wasn’t a factor here - the Chiefs have a ton of cap room, and this deal could pay Hali more than $10 million per year anyway. Overall, it makes Hali one of the better-paid defenders in the NFL, just a bit below Cowboys pass-rusher DeMarcus Ware’s six-year, $78 million deal.
