Former Steelers Coach Gifts Mercedes To Team Cook Before Leaving

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports on a surprising gesture by former Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Horton, who shocked team cook Mo Matthews by selling him his Mercedes for $20 before Horton left to take the Arizona Cardinals' defensive coordinator job.

↵↵“I’m like, ‘Stop playing with me Ray; don’t play with me,’ ” Matthews said. “The other [workers] were looking at me, their jaws dropped.

↵“Ray said, ‘Hey, you always liked the car, you’re a good dude, I know you’ll take care of it. It’s yours.”

↵↵The next day, Matthews drove Horton to the airport, and Horton gave him the title.

↵That’s an incredible gesture by Horton, for sure, but it’s also strange to square the timing of it with the NFL Lockout, which at one point looked like it had the potential to delay the NFL season. It didn’t, of course, because ultimately, there’s enough money to go around. So much, in fact, that a secondary coach and former NFL cornerback could give a cook his Mercedes in exchange for $20 and a ride to the airport.
