Cam Newton Sets NFL Rookie Record For Passing Yards In Debut

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has already joined Peyton Manning in the records book for his Week 1 performance. Newton passed for 422 yards in his pro debut, smashing Peyton Manning's record from 1998. Manning threw for 302 yards against the Miami Dolphins that Sunday.

Newton, like Manning, did lose the game, but his stat line looked much better all-around. He had two touchdowns and was 24-of-37 passing. One of Newton’s touchdowns was a 77-yard strike to Steve Smith.

While it is premature to say that Newton is definitely an NFL quarterback, Panthers fans should be excited that they have a multidimensional quarterback who will provide more excitement that Jake Delhomme or Jimmy Clausen ever did.
