Redskins Score 28-14 Week 1 Win As Defense Clamps Down On Giants

Washington’s defense starred as the Redskins topped the Giants in a season opener for the first time since 1976.

The Washington Redskins got their first win of the 2011 NFL season by putting the screws to one of their NFC East rivals. And it was Washington's new-look defense that gave the New York Giants fits in the 'Skins' 28-14 victory at FedEx Field.

The Redskins sacked Eli Manning four times, and rookie Ryan Kerrigan gave Washington a lead it wouldn't relinquish with an incredible interception return for a touchdown. That defense also held the Giants to just one third down conversion on 10 tries.

But Washington's offense wasn't bad, either. Rex Grossman threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, and found Jabar Gaffney and Anthony Armstrong on scoring strikes. Tight end Fred Davis proved to be a reliable option, catching five passes for 105 yards. And new running back Tim Hightower was productive, if not flashy, rushing for 72 yards and a score.

The win was Washington’s first season-opening victory against the Giants since 1976.
