Cam Newton set an NFL rookie record for most passing yards in a Week 1 debut, but his Carolina Panthers came up short against the Arizona Cardinals, 28-21. Newton's 422 passing yards smashed Peyton Manning's 302 yards as a rookie back in 1998, but Kevin Kolb and Patrick Peterson dominated the fourth quarter.

Cam Newton set a rookie record for most passing yards in a Week 1 debut, but his Panthers fell to the Arizona Cardinals.
Cam Newton's touchdown run in the third quarter had put the Panthers in the lead, 21-14, but Kevin Kolb opened up the scoring the fourth quarter with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Early Doucet. Newton was unable to get things on the ensuing drive, forcing a punt to 2011 fifth overall pick Patrick Peterson. That was a bad idea, as Peterson took the ball 89 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Newton kept passing for yards on the following drives, but he ultimately failed on 4th-and-5 with a four-yard pass at the 1:14 mark.
Newton’s first NFL touchdown pass was a 77-yard strike to Steve Smith in the first quarter. He had 440 total yards of offense while the team as a whole had 477 yards.
The Panthers (0-1) host the Green Bay Packers (1-0) next week. The Cardinals (1-0) head to FedEx Field to face the Washington Redskins, who beat the New York Giants in Week 1.
