NFC Divisional Playoffs 2012, Saints Vs. 49ers: Alex Smith Triggers $1 Million Bonus For Playing

With the San Francisco 49ers hosting the New Orleans Saints in the 2012 NFL Playoffs, 49ers quarterback Alex Smith's wallet just got a little thicker. By playing in a playoff game, Smith has triggered a $1 million bonus in his contract according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The clause stipulated that Smith must play at least 70 percent of the snaps during the regular season and play in the playoff game. Smith also earned another bonus in his contract by playing 80 percent of the snaps and received a $1.5 million bonus. Smith’s salary for the 2011 NFL season was originally $4 million, but with triggering the two bonuses it will push his total 2011 money to around $6.5 million.

Not bad for a guy who many expected to be benched in favor of second round draft pick Colin Kaepernick mid-way through the season.
