NFL Playoffs 2012: Saints’ Record-Breaking Offense Will Be On Display Vs. Lions

The New Orleans Saints came too late to get the Greatest Show on Turf moniker bestowed upon them, but the Detroit Lions have to know that's probably what they'll be defending against in this weekend's NFC Wild Card game. The Saints will host the Lions in the Superdome, where they went undefeated this season, when the playoffs begins on Saturday night.

The Saints broke quite a few records in the Superdome this season as they supplanted Kurt Warner and the 2000 St. Louis Rams on their way to quite a few records. Drew Brees was responsible for the majority of them, but Canal Street Chronicles published a list of some of the team records they broke over the course of the 16-game season.

  • 7,474 - NFL record for total yards gained in a season
  • 5,347 - NFL record for most net passing yards in a season
  • 329 points - NFL record for most points at home in a season
  • 472 - NFL record for most completed passes
  • 71.3% - NFL record for highest completion percentage in a season.
  • 416 - NFL record for most first downs in a season
  • 280 - NFL record for most passing first downs in a season
  • 6 - NFL record for fewest fumbles in a season
  • 56.7% - NFL record for highest third-down conversion percentage in a season (since 1991)
  • 547 - Franchise record for most points in a season

Knowing how great the Saints played at home this season and how many records they broke, it’s probably safe to assume that Detroit’s coaching staff isn’t looking forward to this weekend’s game. The Lions’ offense isn’t too bad itself, though, meaning this game will likely (d)evolve into a shootout before all is said and done.

Check out Canal Street Chronicles for the latest on the Saints and Pride of Detroit for the latest on the Lions, and head on over to the SBNation NFL news hub for everything you need to know about the 2012 playoffs.
