AFC Wild Card 2012: Dennis Dixon Is Tim Tebow For Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers No. 3 quarterback Dennis Dixon is helping the defense prepare for Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow and the read-option offense, Tom Kensler of The Denver Post reports.

“We prepare for (the option) during the off-season because in the National Football League we understand where this game could have gone and could go. We’ve been looking at it now for the last several years,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said. “That’s one of the reasons why we acquired a guy like Dennis Dixon with that skill set. He played at Oregon in a spread attack, or a spread-read attack. We’ve always had a package of plays like that.”

The 6-foot-3, 209-pound Dixon passed for over 5,100 yards and 38 touchdowns during his college career, but had over 1,000 net rushing yards (over 1,200 gross rushing yards) in former Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti’s spread option offense before he was selected in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Dixon has started three of the four games he’s played in during his NFL career, passing for 402 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and gaining 56 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Dixon will be a free agent in the offseason.
