After the Detroit Lions cut into the New Orleans Saints lead with a touchdown, the Saints began another time consuming drive. A penalty on Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch gave the Saints drive new life on third down, setting up a 17-yard pass from Drew Brees to Marques Colston on another third down to keep the drive going. On the very next series, the Saints needed a 3-yard run on fourth and two by Darren Sproles.

The Saints picked up short chunks of yards instead of their typical big chunks of yardage and just bled time off the clock. On another third and long, Brees connected with Sproles to pick up the first down. On the very next play, Sproles took the handoff off the left tackle for a 17-yard touchdown run, his second of the night, untouched.
