Eric Winston responds to backlash from Chiefs fans

Kansas City tackle Eric Winston is standing behind comments he made last Sunday, after fans cheered Matt Cassel’s injury

The Chiefs fans who were cheering Matt Cassel's injury in the second half of Kansas City's 9-6 loss to Baltimore last Sunday had tackle Eric Winston calling their actions "sickening" in a post-game interview. Winston again stood behind his comments in a Tuesday interview on Houston's KILT with Rich Lord and Josh Innes. Asked whether he had "any doubt" about what he heard and saw, Winston had this to say:

I was there; I was on the field. It was obvious to me, but like I said, people are going to make their own conclusions. I’ve had a lot of support. I’ve had a lot of people that have emailed me from around the league. I had a person, today, stop me in my car when I was leaving the store and they just wanted to say, ‘Thank you.’

Winston was asked if he might retire earlier because of the health risk in playing football. In response, Winston told KILT that he “used to say that I was going to play until they took that jersey away from me - I don’t know if that’s the case anymore.”

On Monday, Winston clarified his comment that 70,000 fans were cheering when Cassel was concussed; he said that any amount cheering an injury is still “too many.” Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel also talked about Winston’s comments Monday.
