Robert Mathis injury: Colts defensive end to miss 2-3 games with sprained knee

The Indianapolis Colts will be without Robert Mathis for the next two to three games, as the linebacker has reportedly confirmed the severity of his knee sprain. Mathis sprained the knee late in the team’s victory over Green Bay.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Robert Mathis will be out for two to three games with a sprained right knee, reports Mike Chappell. Mathis had gone to Atlanta looking for a second opinion on the injury, which occurred late in Sunday's victory over the Green Bay Packers. He tried to get back in the game, wearing a knee brace, but was unable to return. With Indianapolis' bye having come and gone in Week 4, Mathis won't have any extra time to recover.

Mathis had a sack and a tackle in that game, giving him five sacks and 11 solo tackles on the year. The four-time Pro Bowler has been a key part of the Colts’ pass rush since he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He has had some trouble with injury, missing games in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Despite the lack of a bye, the timing of the injury could be worse. The Colts' next two games come against the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns, both teams that are struggling to find any consistency on offense.
