Fred Davis injury: Redskins tight end done for season with torn achilles

Tight end Fred Davis suffered a torn achilles tendon in the first quarter of the Washington Redskins’ 27-23 loss to the New York Giants and will be out for the rest of the 2012 season.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan confirmed, after the team's 27-23 loss to the New York Giants, that the achilles tendon injury suffered by tight end Fred Davis was in fact a tear and would end his season.

Davis was injured on the Redskins’ first drive of game. With Washington inside the red zone, Davis ran a route into the end zone, but went down and had to be helped off the field, putting no pressure on the leg. Later, Davis had to be taken from the sideline to the locker room on a cart and did not return to the game.

The fifth-year tight end out of USC had one catch for 13 yards before leaving with the injury. Davis’ 2012 season ends with 23 receptions for 312 yards and no touchdowns.

After losing their first NFC East game of the year to the Giants and falling to 3-4 on the year, the Redskins will face the Pittsburgh Steelers next week. That game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 28 at Heinz Field.
