Redskins sign Chris Cooley in wake of Fred Davis injury

The Washington Redskins re-signed tight end Chris Cooley to replace Fred Davis, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on Sunday. Cooley, who was released prior to 2012, is the Redskins’ all-time leader in receptions for tight ends.

The Washington Redskins announced on Monday that they have officially re-signed veteran tight end Chris Cooley in the wake of a season-ending injury suffered by Fred Davis on Sunday.

Davis went down while running a route in the end zone on the Redskins' first drive of the game Sunday against the New York Giants. He was helped off the field and eventually taken to the locker room on a cart. He did not return in the 27-23 loss and after the game, Washington head coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that the Achilles tear would end Davis' season.

The Redskins moved quickly to fill the hole at tight end, signing Cooley on Monday and placing Davis on injured reserve.

Cooley rejoins the only team he has ever played for, spending eight seasons with the Redskins before being released prior to the 2012 season. He is the team’s all-time leader in receptions from the tight end position. For his career, Cooley has 423 catches for 4,703 yards and 33 touchdowns.
