Rashard Mendenhall injury: Steelers RB could return for Week 8

Steelers running back could play in Sunday’s showdown with Redskins.

Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall could play in Sunday's Week 8 contest against the visiting Washington Redskins, head coach Mike Tomlin told Mike Bires of the Beaver County Times on Tuesday. Mendenhall is recovering from an Achilles injury that forced him to miss Sunday night's 24-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

If Mendenhall is able to go it would add more depth the Steelers running back corps, which has been missing Mendenhall and backup Isaac Redman (ankle), and relying on backup Jonathan Dwyer to carry the load. Dwyer ran for 122 yards in a starting role on Sunday.

Already this season, Mendenhall has missed four games because of the injury that initially occurred in last season’s finale.

The road to full recovery has been slow for the two-time 1,000-yard tailback. In his two starts this year, the University of Illinois product has rushed for 74 yards on 19 attempts. Dwyer is the team’s leading rusher with just 192 yards.
