Jon Beason injury: Panthers place LB on injured reserve

After missing almost all of 2011, Jon Beason looks to be out for the rest of 2012 as well, likely needing knee surgery.

Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason has been placed on the injured reserve, the team announced Wednesday, and will likely undergo season-ending knee surgery.

Beason, the sixth-year pro out of Miami, has missed the last two weeks because of the knee injury. He has recorded 28 tackles and one interception in four games this season. His luck has been short lately, having missed all but one game of 2011 with an Achilles injury.

Prior to 2011, Beason started all 64 games of his previous four seasons. He has totaled 573 tackles, four sacks, and nine interceptions in his NFL career.

Rookie Luke Kuechly is expected to continue to fill Beason’s spot in his absence. The tackle machine from Boston College recorded 532 tackles in his college career, including a whopping 191 in his senior year. In six games with the Panthers, Kuechly has 51 tackles, three passes defended, and one interception.

At 1-5, the Panthers next play at the Chicago Bears this Sunday.
