Giants vs. Cowboys, Week 8: Dallas fans heartbroken once again

The Dallas Cowboys appeared to have another improbably victory within their grasp, falling just short once more on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Tom Pennington

The Dallas Cowboys fell just inches short of yet another amazing comeback, as Dez Bryant's fingers landed just out of bounds on what appeared to be the winning touchdown catch in the final seconds of the game. As it stood, the New York Giants walked away with a 29-24 win, their fourth at Cowboys Stadium since Jerry Jones' monument opened in 2009.

Tony Romo and the Cowboys got off to a horrendous start, spotting the Giants a 23-0 lead early in the second quarter thanks to three interceptions and four turnovers. The Cowboys defense had an overall incredibly effective game against the Eli Manning and the Giants offense, giving the Cowboys a long shot a comeback that began with a Felix Jones touchdown run in the second quarter.

The Cowboys would storm from behind to take a 24-23 lead in the third quarter before the offense stalled once more, and Romo’s long pass to Bryant in the final seconds serving as a perfect summation of the game and season as a whole.

KD Drummond of Blogging The Boys laments what seems to be a predetermined fate for Bryant and the Cowboys.

Star-crossed.

That’s the best description that I can come up with for the plight of Dez Bryant and basically the plight of the Dallas Cowboys 2012 season thus far. William Shakespeare-level star-crossed.

...

Dez Bryant, the butt of so many jokes, insults, derisive jeers throughout the season (and prior) ran a beautiful double move with under 20 seconds to go, leaped into the air between two defenders and hauled in the game-winning catch. Except, it wasn’t. Using his hand to brace his fall, his fingers landed outside of the endzone before his rear hit the turf; incomplete. Effectively game over. Star-crossed.

The road for the Cowboys gets tougher next week, as Dallas heads to Atlanta to take on the Falcons on Sunday Night Football.
