Joe Mays injury: Broncos LB out for the season

Denver Broncos linebacker Joe Mays will miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken leg against the New Orleans Saints Sunday.

Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

Denver Broncos linebacker Joe Mays will miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken leg, according to a report from the Denver Post.

Mays was blocking on the Broncos punt return unit during the Broncos' 34-14 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday when a Saints player accidentally landed on Mays, fracturing his fibula.

Mays has had a rough season after signing a three-year contract extension over the offseason. Mays started the first three games at middle linebacker for the Broncos, but he was suspended for a game after a violent hit to Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub.

After his suspension, Mays immediately came back to the starting lineup against the New England Patriots, but lost his starting position to Keith Brooking the following week against the San Diego Chargers.

In his fifth season out of North Dakota State, Mays recorded 20 tackles on the year for the Broncos. The Broncos have not made a decision yet on who will replace Mays on the 53-man roster.
