Matt Cassel, not Brady Quinn, will start for Chiefs vs. Chargers

Brady Quinn has been ruled out for Thursday night’s game against the Chargers, so the Kansas City Chiefs will turn to Matt Cassel to start.

With a short turnaround before their next game, the Kansas City Chiefs have ended any suspense and named Matt Cassel their starting quarterback against the San Diego Chargers for their Thursday-night matchup, according to a tweet by Kansas City Star beat writer Adam Teicher.

Teicher also said Brady Quinn is ruled out for the game and Ricky Stanzi will dress as the No. 2 option.

Quinn started the Chiefs' loss to the Raiders on Sunday but left early with a concussion. Head coach Romeo Crennel had said Quinn would get the start again over Cassel if he were cleared to play, so with Quinn being ruled out, it shouldn't be read as a sudden vote of confidence in Cassel.

As Arrowhead Pride's Joel Thorman writes, the quarterback against the Chargers should matter less than the running back, anyway. Jamaal Charles only had five carries against Oakland, something that will probably have to improve if the Chiefs (1-6) have any hope to get their second win of the season.
