Jeff Fisher puts a stop to Steven Jackson trade rumors

Steven Jackson is not going anywhere prior to the NFL trade deadline says head coach Jeff Fisher.

St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher squelched the Steven Jackson trade talk at his Tuesday afternoon press conference.

“The Steven Jackson rumors are rumors,” Fisher said. “He’s our running back. We’re not calling around nor are we getting calls, for that matter. So, I’ll put that to rest.”

Jackson's name has been floating around the rumor mill for days. Reports from ESPN and other outlets had teams from the Cowboys to the Packers as potential suitors for the veteran running back, the $3.7 million remaining on his contract supposedly seen as a minor hurdle for those teams to negotiate.

It’s very likely that the Rams did not get the kind of offers the team was hoping for in exchange for a player of Jackson’s stature. At this point, Jackson has more value to the Rams through the final eight games of the season, keeping at least one viable player in the moribund offense.

Those eight game could still be Jackson’s last with the Rams. Earlier in the season, Jackson and the team renegotiated his deal to give him the option of opting out of his contract for 2013. It also gives the team the option of releasing him. The contract voids five days after the Super Bowl if neither side chooses to renew.
