Tom Brady, Alex Smith named AFC, NFC Players of the Week

Coming off superb performances from very different places on the globe, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and 49ers quarterback Alex Smith were named AFC, NFC Offensive Players of the Week on Wednesday.

Dominating from a different continent in the New England Patriots' 45-7 win, quarterback Tom Brady was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week by the NFL on Wednesday. The Pats crushed the St. Louis Rams in London's Wembley Stadium as Brady passed for 304 yards and four touchdowns.

In the NFC, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith unsurprisingly was named Offensive Player of the Week after his near-perfect performance against the Arizona Cardinals. By completing 18-of-19 passes for 232 yards and three scores, Smith set the record for highest completion percentage by any passer with 15-plus attempts.

On the defensive side of things, Broncos linebacker Wesley Woodyard and Giants safety Stevie Brown won the two Defensive Player of the Week awards.

Woodyard recorded 13 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble in the Broncos' 34-14 victory over the New Orleans Saints, while Brown recorded six tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in the Giants' 29-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Blocked punts were all the rage for this week's Special Teams Players of the Week, as Dolphins defensive end Oliver Vernon recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in addition to blocking a field goal attempt, while Packers cornerback Davon House blocked a punt of his own against the Jaguars.
