Aqib Tailb trade: ‘Classic low risk, high reward’ move for Patriots

Over at Pats Pulpit, they see the Patriots’ trade for Aqib Talib as a low risk move to improve the secondary.

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE

The New England Patriots acquired cornerback Aqib Talib from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, giving up a fourth-round pick and getting a seventh rounder back from Tampa Bay. Talib is known for being a very good player, but he's been prone to issues off the field.

Over at Pats Pulpit, Greg Knopping sees the addition as a “classic low risk, high reward” move by the Patriots. The team has been known for taking a chance on a talented but troubled player in the past, especially when the cost to acquire that talent is next to nothing. Knopping had the following to say about the Patriots’ new corner:

“Talib is undoubtedly a talented cornerback, who is one of the better physical man cover defensive backs in the league. However, he’s had character issues in the past, being suspended for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy in 2010. Nonetheless, Talib is on the final year of his five-year rookie deal and the Patriots aren’t giving up much in compensation.”

Talib's past character issues include a violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy, which has seen him out of action since October 13. He'll have to sit out the Patriots next game when they face the Buffalo Bills in Week 10.

Talib will be eligible to play for the Patriots on November 18, which gives him just over two weeks to get familiar with the Patriots defense. The Patriots will be hosting Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts in that game.
